Obituary of Larry Powers

Laurence O. Powers, 78, of Ontario, Oregon, passed away peacefully at home Feb. 26, 2019. He was predeceased by his parents Charles Oman and Adelaide Powers, brother Jimmy, sister Jackie Leimgruber, and daughter Vickie Powers. Laurence was born in California and raised on the Powers Dairy Farm. After graduation from school he began his career in law enforcement where he served many years and was involved with young people supporting athletics and volunteerism. After several years he made a decision to move his family to Enterprise, Or. and accepted a police officer position. As a young man he had traveled to the beautiful Wallowa county area and he never forgot how lovely it was.

As his life moved on he moved to Pendleton, Or. and was hired in the Water Resource Department and later became an Oregon State Water Master. He married and became active in the Pendleton area serving as a Pendleton Round-up volunteer and served as Exalted Ruler for Elks Lodge #288 He also was leader in starting the “Rovin’ Elks Camper Club’’. After being qualified for the Oregon State Water Master list, the position in Malheur County (and part of Harney County) came about.

In Ontario he became active in the Coast Guard Auxiliary, teaching boating safety, doing patrols on the water, and free fishing day for children. After obtaining Coxwain and Crew status he was selected as Division 11 captain. Division 11 consisted of flotillas in Ontario, Caldwell, 2 in Boise, and one in Idaho Falls. He served as an Ontario Ambassador and a trustee in the Ontario Elks Lodge. Larry was always there to help a neighbor or anyone who needed it. He helped his wife with her projects including ABWA flower and yard sales over the years that provided funds for scholarships. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and traveling to Alaska. A great outdoor guy.

Larry is survived by his wife, Martha Sue, 2 sons, Robert, Caldwell, ID., Larry Jr., Seattle, WA., stepdaughters Angela Pauline Mahaffey, Walla Walla, WA., Pamela Sue Hill, Lebanon, OR., step son John Hillis Richardson, Pendleton, Or., niece, Patty Irunguary and nephews Ernie, Wally, and Ronnie Leimgruber and their families in Holtville, CA. Larry had made a request some time ago not to have a memorial service. Any donations to remember Larry can be made to the American Heart Association, or to animal rescue and adoption. The family expresses their gratitude to the Ontario EMTs, doctors and nurses at St. Luke’s in Boise, Meridian, Nampa, Fruitland and Starks’ Medical here in Ontario for their wonderful care.
