It was sometime after Merle had moved to the farmhouse on Blessinger Lane that Merle's birthday came up. It was decided that we would go to the restaurant in Marsing to celebrate his birthday. Robbie and I put on our thinking caps to determine an appropriate gift to celebrate the occasion. We thought maybe a gift for the house would be appropriate, like a replacement for some of the old toilet seats. We chose a fancy oak toilet seat, but to give it a personal touch we searched for a life-size photo of a female derriere. We attached the photo to the underside of the toilet lid. Thus when you viewed the toilet seat from below (a fish-eye view) you would see the photo. The toilet seat was gift wrapped and presented to Merle during the dinner. Merle unwrapped it, looked at it and thanked us. I said "turn it upside down" , he broke into instant laughter and proceeded to show his gift to everyone in the restaurant. After he returned to our table he said he hadn't decided whether he would actually use it or hang it on the wall as a picture. A later visit to Merle's house found the toilet seat on the commode withe the derriere photo still attached to the lid.

Merle Marr Maxwell was my genius cousin. Lots of good memories. His mom and dad were worried abount him not keeping his grades up.......He always got
"A's" and when I checked on this I found out in Mid-term he got a "B" in just one class. At the end of the semester he had straight "A's".................good thing my Aunt and Uncle never saw my report cards.

I met Merle many years ago through Cindy who was my son Ryan's 3rd grade teacher. I had the honor and privilege to help Merle take care of the twins for two weeks while their babysitter was on vacation. Merle and I worked together feeding those precious tiny babies and had some wonderful conversations. He was a wonderful man who I will always remember with love. My love to the family always.

Merle was my dad's eldest cousin. We were privileged to all live together in the Treasure Valley which meant spending the night at cousin's houses, gathering often for family meals, reunions, etc.. For Merle and his family specifically, it meant races at the horse track, rides in the truck for horse stuff (I'm remembering a day trip to Idaho Falls or Twin Falls with Merle and Mike for some reason), running around his property, and it meant just sitting and visiting, and remembering. It meant, excitement when you saw the M (cubed) license plate, knowing you'd get the biggest, warmest hug; hear the softest, sweetest voice; and see those brown eyes look directly into yours with love. It meant knowing he'd always show up when you needed him. In the past five years, it has meant more of the same; gathering at ball games; a call to meet for lunch (or just outside the door at Petco for a quick hug); a happy birthday phone call, a text of love; or dinner and The Voice at home with him, Cindy and those beautiful children all of whom brought him so much joy and happiness like none I'd ever seen before!
