I want to send my most sorrowful feelings to the Commander-in-Chief of Idaho's Military Forces, represented by His Excellency the Honourable Joseph R. Biden Jr. and Her Excellency the Honourable Kamala D. Harris, on the passing of a true hero. My prayers are with the former Second Lady and her husband as well as the many benefactors in the state's Governor and First Lady's extended family and each others' numerous friends at this sombre time.

Phil will truly be missed in our community. He was a very dear friend to my family. The kindness that he showed to my mother, she always cherished. His love for our hospital was shown in so many ways. My thoughts and prayers are with the Soulen family. Sherry Strong Young

Our hearts go out to you, Teresa, Margaret, Helen, Harry and family. I hope this memory helps you through this time of loss, and assures you that your father will not be forgotten.
Your dear one, Phil, kindly gave a shepherd's crook to me at a sheep loading near McCall, Idaho. Phil barely knew me, a Basque girl there to experience the sheep and the sheep herders, not really knowing the very important business I was in the middle of! During the lunch break, I bravely told Phil I was teaching children about the Good Shepherd, Jesus, and that I should probably have one of those shepherd's crooks for my students. Much to my delight, Phil's eyes lit up in agreement with my wish and he immediately handed me a crook! It was the real deal, worn and well representing the work of tending sheep. In thanksgiving, the following year I brought Phil some "Sheepherder's Brownies" packed in a coffee can, just like my grandmother use to send out with the Basque sheepherders. He and Harry both, were patient with my talk of The Good Shepherd and how that crook was helping my students understand caring for sheep. The last time I saw Phil was at his home in McCall and he was fondly remembering how his folks built their lakeside cabin. He also shared how the sheep would soon be running down West Mountain, past my grandparent's cabin I imagined. Such a treasure are our memories of our loved ones passed!
My husband, Steve, and I first heard of your dad's passing during this year's Trailing of the Sheep Parade in Sun Valley. It was good to see Phil's passing honored in the parade. Since then, we've learned much more of your dad's extraordinary life and amazing accomplishments. Even more so do I love and admire your dad, for taking the time to include this Basque girl in his life, in this legacy of Phil Soulen's love for others. The shepherd's crook has become iconic, and I am still enjoying Phil's kindness.
With love and gratitude,
Suzanne and Steve Uberuaga-Fowles

Margaret, Teresa, Helen, Harry & families ( I know that list isn't in order of appearance, but it's the order in which I met the Soulen kids) - I was sorry to learn that your Dad had passed away. What a beautifully written obituary; it is a wonderful tribute and really captured the essence of the man in such a short article. It gave me the feeling that your whole family collaborated on it. Writing an obituary is one of the hardest things that children have to do for their parents because it really is one of the last things that you must do for them, especially so soon after they are gone, and you really can't say EVERYTHING that you want to, and obviously it must be concise, unless you want to publish your own edition of The Statesman, which is what his would require! Congratulations on a job well done [it might sound weird to be saying "Congratulations" regarding an obituary, but I hope you know what I mean.]
I always liked your Dad - your lovely Mom, too, of course! - they both treated me, all of us Johnsons, as well as I'm sure all of your other friends and peers, with kindness and respect even when many of us teenage punks of the 70's totally didn't deserve it. They were always welcoming and generous with their hospitality both in Weiser and McCall (our gang of girls hanging out at the cabin that weekend during the summer of '73 - WooHoo! We did get a tiny bit of a scolding from your Mom, but again, MUCH less than we deserved). He did so much for WHS and the Weiser community at large, not to mention the U of I, etc,.etc.,etc. Margaret - I'm not sure I ever told you this, but I remember thinking after our graduation, how cool it was that Bob Farley handed out the diplomas for the names A-M, and your Dad for N-Z so that they could each hand the diploma to their own child. It worked out perfectly with your last names, but I have no doubt that even if it hadn't in the first place, they would have made sure to figure something out!
I know that my parents had some fun times with Harry, Beulah, Phil and Erlene, back in the day, at the Golf Course, in McCall, and probably the Elks Club and I'm sure I have no idea of where-all else! They had a deep respect and fondness for all of them. It was a very hard thing when you lost Erlene, but he and you-all are fortunate that later, he and Adelia were able to spend so much time together. I ran into him many times at the Golf Course when I visited Weiser, and he always greeted me with a smile and a "how are you, and how's your family?" {And now you are doing that too, Harry! :) }I remember meeting Adelia when there was a fund-raiser there when I happened to be visiting, I think it was for the Weiser Education Foundation. She was very gracious and it was obvious that they were very happy to be with each other.
Someone posted on Facebook that PBS had done a documentary about your Dad's life and your family business, so of course I looked it up. So awesome! I really enjoyed it. It's interesting that obviously the production staff didn't actually visit the town, because there is a mistake in there that should be pretty glaring to anyone from Weiser. I told Leslie to watch it, and she pointed out to me that there is also a typo in one of the subtitles. I am actually a proofreader and I missed that! No doubt it was because I was so distracted and annoyed by the error that I had already spotted. I'm not going to tell you what they are, you'll have to watch it again! Or maybe you already knew.
The gathering next month will be a wonderful occasion with a myriad of memories, repeated (probably some that were not-repeatable when they occurred), and an outpouring of respect and appreciation for your Dad, no doubt including lots of laughter! I hope it can be a time of healing for all of you - and that you will be prepared for a long day!
I'm sure that your Mom and Dad and their departed family members are enjoying a glorious reunion on the other side! You have our sympathy and wishes for a gentle transition into the curious stage of being "orphans." Your Dad was fortunate to have lived a long and productive life, and you are all carrying on his legacy in a beautiful way.
The Johnson Family: Dick, Stephanie, Chris, Beverly, Tricia and Stacey.
