When I think of my memories of Duane, the father to my best friend, of course there are so many remembrances of all the regular and silly stuff from every day life. But my most profound memory is, and always will be, of his constant and quiet devotion to his beloved wife, Gert. It wasn’t very often that I would see Gert without him by her side. They truly were two peas in a pod. When I think of love and devotion, the picture of Duane, always at his wife’s side, is what I see. And that is what I will always remember about him. That love and devotion also spread out to his 4 beautiful daughters and their families as well as to his other family and countless friends and neighbors. I am thankful for our last visit with him and Gert last Fall. That was a great day, rattlesnakes and all. His fishing tips are gospel with my husband now! Sending big, warm hugs and deepest condolences to Gert and her girls. Love you all and may you be comforted by God’s warm embrace.

My Grandpa! The other strong male role model on my life. I owe so much to my grandfather. My love of animals, outdoors, finding the beauty in nature, fishing hunting and so much more.
One of my fond memories of my grandfather starts when I was little. Grandma and Grandpa have a smoke house at their house. I remember sitting with grandpa in the font porch with a ceramic jug. In the jug was deer or elk meet that we just harvested from that years tag. I remember watching him as he added the spices and stirring it with his hands. We would walk out to the smoke house and put the jerky on the racks. I can still smell it and taste it. No one makes jerky like grandpa.
I remember how he always looked out for us, kicking our tires to make sure they were always aired up. If our windshield was dirty he would grab the windex and clean it or take the hose and just tell you to put the windshield wipers on.
Camping and outdoors were such a major part of my life. Fond memories of creek fishing, crappie fishing and then taking the fish to grandma. She would shake and bake them or put them in some concoction of batter and fry them up.
I was so proud to be the trappers granddaughter. I loved to see how many animals he got. I would always ask him. I had the privilege of going with him when he worked. I loved it. I remember when he would fly in the airplane as part if his job working as a trapper. He would fly over our house and the pilot would drop these bright orange flags. We would grab those and run with them like kites. They were from our grandpa.
He never stopped working, always on the move, serving his family.
He had such a great sense of humor. He always cracked me up.
Grandpa! I will miss you so much. I know you are looking down on us. We will be ok without you here. It will be hard, but we are strong women because of you.
Love you papa!!! Shannon

Duane Louis DeLong, 82, died peacefully at home of natural causes in his wife’s arms on April
23, 2020.
Duane Louis DeLong was born in Hebron, Nebraska, on October 29, 1937, to Ralph and
Christina (Bruning) DeLong. He had 7 siblings: Marion (deceased), Doris, Bill, Ken, Ralph
(deceased), Steve and Richard.
Duane met and married Gert Schaffeld in 1958. With this union, they had 4 daughters:
Jeannie, Linda (deceased), Julie and Stephanie. These four daughters gave them 7 grandchildren:
Shannon, Laura and Kyle; Lauren and Lacey; Lisa; and Henry.
The grandchildren gave them 10 great-grandchildren. Duane was preceded in death by his
parents, two siblings, his daughter Linda and son-in-law Steve Netcher.
Duane started farming for the Maag family shortly after he moved to Oregon. He worked for
them for many years. He always said, “I would have worked a year for nothing for what I have learned
about farming from the Maags.” (This is a direct quote from Duane.)
Gert and Duane lived in the Jamieson area all of their married lives, eventually making their
home on the Schaffeld Home place.
In 1987, he took a job to pursue his true passion of trapping. He turned the farm over to Jeannie and
Steve. He was the Government Trapper until his retirement in 2002. He continued trapping until the
end and had just renewed his trapping license for the 2020 season.
He had many passions in life. These include family, farming, fishing, crabbing, clamming,
hunting, trapping and gardening for the family and anyone who wanted to come pick veggies.
There was a serious side to Duane, but we more often saw his witty and humorous side.
We could go on and on about this wonderful man and what he means to all of us. He was an
educator to us and always gave us his advice even if we didn’t want to hear it or listen. We will miss
his “attention-getting whistle” and sense of humor.
We are proud and honored to be his wife and daughters. We are all better because of his
upbringing and life examples.
We look forward to hearing your stories of Duane throughout the coming years. It will be what
keeps his memory alive in all of us.
Thank you for your continued support. We love him and will miss him in our daily lives, but we
know that he is already watching over us and guiding us through these times.
Love, Gert, Jeannie, Julie, Stephanie and all of our family
