It is for many things that I remember Ruth, namely her quiet elegance which she passed to her daughters, and also as an ardent volleyball fan. I looked to Ruth and Dudley from the court as much as I looked to my own parents...Ruth and Dudley were likely there more often. I don't recall which high school year it was that I was a passenger with Mary, Ruth and Dudley enroute to a volleyball game, no doubt. We stopped at a rest stop and Ruth graciously bestowed on me one of the pearls she no doubt told her own children about using public facilities. I still hear Ruth's voice to this day and always heed it!
At JR and Mary's wedding, I recall her quiet presence beamed loudly that day, so proud and delighted to see her beautiful Mary marry JR in front of an altar full of pink and white at St. Patrick's filled to the hilt with joyous friends and family.
Seventy years with Dudley is simply phenomenal. Mary, you and JR can do the same. Ruth and Dudley represented constancy, a quality she must have truly prized to give it to Mary as a middle name - as I hope my memory serves correctly. Though it was shortly after JR and Mary's wedding that I made my exit, I feel graced to have known a person of such character in my early years. It is the early years that are cornerstones for the life built upon them...I was lucky that there was Ruth in one of those cornerstones.
Sending love and my most heartfelt condolences to all of the family,
Katy Kavanaugh
