Obituary of Alice Mitsue Sugahiro

Alice Mitsue Sugahiro, 97, of Ontario, Oregon passed away on May 19, 2023.

 

Alice was born March 13, 1926, to Tokuhe and Tsuye Nakamura in Canby, Oregon.  She spent her childhood years there until the age of ten.  In 1936 her family moved to Gaston, Oregon where they farmed until her family was evacuated to the Minidoka Interment Camp in Idaho.

 

After the war, her family moved to Portland, Oregon.  On September 6, 1949, she married Larry Sugahiro.  Two years later the couple moved to Ontario, Oregon to help his sister, Reiko Shiraishi, with her drug store business and family.

 

In 1968 she started working as a paraprofessional in the Migrant School Program for the Ontario School District.  She continued working in that program until the age of 70. 

 

Alice enjoyed the many organizations and activities she participated in with the people of the Blessed Sacrament Church.  Her favorite hobbies were oil and water color painting, investing, and gardening.

 

Alice was preceded in death by her husband, Larry Sugahiro.  She is survived by her daughter Cathy (Henry) Hamanishi; sons Scott Sugahiro and Mike Sugahiro; Grandchildren Laurie (Brian) Adams and Matt (Kayla) Hamanishi; six great grandchildren; Nyjah and Kyrie Adams, Karly, Carter, Remy, and Maddie Hamanishi, and many nieces, nephews and their families.

 

The family would like to thank the staff at Aspen Creek Senior Living and Horizon Hospice for the care extended to Alice over the past few years.

 

A rosary and viewing will be held at Lienkaemper Funeral Chapel, Ontario, Oregon from 5 pm to 7 pm June 1.  A funeral service and Mass will be held at Blessed Sacrament Church, 829 S.W. 2nd Ave., Ontario Oregon on June 2 at 11 am.  Burial will follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Ontario.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Alice’s name to Blessed Sacrament Church, Ontario, Oregon or St. Peter’s Catholic School, Ontario, Oregon.
