Obituary of Inez Howland

Inez Wood Howland, 102 of Riggins passed away January 3, 2024 in Council.

Inez Wood, born on November 21st, 1921, in Bells, Tennessee, to Ed and Geneva Wood on a rural farm, embarked on a remarkable journey that spanned a rich tapestry of experiences. Following her graduation from high school, she pursued further education at business school, eventually relocating to Washington DC to contribute her skills to her country by working for the War Department during World War II.

It was in the nation's capital that Inez crossed paths with Ronald Henry (Buck) Howland. Their journey together began on Christmas day in 1941 when they exchanged vows in Tennessee before making their way to Yakima, Washington. There, Inez and Buck welcomed their two children, Zevada Howland Smith and Ronald Randolph Howland. As the children grew, Inez and Buck set their sights on Cambridge, where they took charge of the family ranch, dedicating themselves to the life of cattle ranching and raising Suffolk Rams. Notably, one of Inez's great loves was breeding and selling golden collies, a passion that added a heartwarming dimension to their shared life and legacy.

In addition to her roles as a rancher’s wife, mother and collie breeder, Inez emerged as a trailblazer for women, making significant contributions to three major dam projects—Hells Canyon, Oxbow, and Brownlee—serving as an administrative assistant. 

The Howland family called Cambridge home until 1970, when Inez and Buck decided to retire to Riggins. The couple enjoyed twelve years together in Riggins until Buck's passing in 1983. Inez remained in the cherished home they had built, creating a haven of memories and a testament to a life well-lived.

Inez, a woman of multifaceted passions, found immense joy in music, cherished her family, and was renowned for her culinary prowess as an amazing cook. Her nimble fingers also weaved tales of warmth through her love for crochet, creating intricate pieces that reflected her creativity and care.

Known far and wide as the nicest person in everyone's acquaintance, Inez's kindness resonated in every interaction. Her love for travel and curiosity about new places illuminated her life. Among the cherished memories was a highlight: visiting her daughter Zevada in England and exploring the scenic landscapes of Scotland, a journey that left an indelible mark on her heart.

Inez was a dedicated member of the senior citizens community, a testament to her vibrant spirit. Remarkably, well into her 90s, she selflessly ferried her fellow "old people" back and forth, embodying a commitment to community and camaraderie.

Her property in Riggins held a special place in her heart, yet the battles with mischievous deer, who devoured her beloved flowers, provided moments of both frustration and amusement. Inez's tenacity shone through, as at any hour, she could be spotted dashing through the yard, flinging her cane in a spirited effort to ward off the deer and protect her cherished blooms. This lively pursuit became a testament to her unwavering spirit and determination, adding another layer to the tapestry of her vibrant life.
 

The departure of Inez creates a significant emptiness within her circle of friends, her daughter Zevada Howland Smith, and her grandchildren Ron Howland, Karen Howland Schotzko, and Christopher Schotzko. The profound loss is palpable for each of them, and Inez's absence will be deeply felt. Inez is preceded in death by her husband, Buck, and her son, Randy Howland. However, her legacy endures in the hearts of those who cherished her, as they continue to carry the memories of a remarkable woman who left an indelible mark on their lives in numerous ways.

The funeral will be held at the Cambridge Baptist Church on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 11:00 AM.  Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donate to either the charity or cause of your choice.
